Coughing is part of the body's self-protective response. Coughing can be a distressful and uncomfortable experience. It is, however, an integral part of the body's self-cleaning mechanism. A cough mainly has the function of clearing the airways, thereby protecting the lungs.
Prevention is better than cure and preventing a cough means preventing the underlying condition that causes the cough. Cough itself can be a symptom of a wide range of things - a reaction to an irritation in the airways, an infection, a response to environmental factors such as cigarette smoke etc...
Our body depends on a constant supply of oxygen. Humans can live a few weeks without eating, a few days without drinking but only a few minutes without breathing. The respiratory system draws air into the body, takes oxygen into the bloodstream and removes the carbon dioxide - the body's "exhaust gas".
